The territory of Azerbaijan is rich in fortifications and fortresses built for defense purposes. One of them is the Askeran fortress. The Askeran fortress, built in the 18th century by order of the Karabakh khan Panah Ali khan, is one of the brightest examples of Azerbaijani architecture.
The construction of the fortress was associated with the rise of the Karabakh Khanate.
After the occupation of Khojaly by the armed forces of the Republic of Armenia in 1992, the fortress has suffered distruction.
